Onboarding

Onboarding is the process of integrating a new employee into an organization and its culture.

It generally extends well beyond the administrative tasks of a first-day orientation. This process starts the moment an offer is accepted and typically lasts through the first few months, sometimes even up to a year.

Its core purpose is to equip the new hire with the necessary knowledge, skills, and social connections—including an understanding of their role, team dynamics, company values, and systems—to become a fully engaged, effective, and productive member of the workforce. Effective onboarding is a critical factor in reducing new-hire turnover, accelerating time-to-competence, and shaping a positive, long-term employee experience.

Onboarding is part of effective performance management

Onboarding is a key component of performance management, as successful onboarding is directly linked to employee success. It is during this phase that the new hire is typically introduced to the ways in which their work will be measured as successful, including the company’s Key Result Areas (KRAs), established performance metrics, and goal-setting processes.

Effective onboarding, including one-on-one meetings and check-ins, will lay the groundwork for continuous, high-quality performance.

A successful performance-focused onboarding program includes:

  • Structured training;
  • An assigned mentor or “buddy,”;
  • Scheduled check-ins that include early, constructive feedback on performance against established short-term goals.

A performance management suite that includes continuous feedback tools makes the onboarding process consistent and easily manageable, even with remote or hybrid teams.
