Employee Experience Design (EXD) is a strategic and human-centered approach to intentionally crafting and optimizing every interaction an employee has with an organization, from the moment they are recruited to the day they exit.
This discipline applies concepts from user experience (UX) and design thinking to map out the entire employee journey, identifying critical touchpoints across the workplace—including:
- The physical environment
- The digital tools and technology
- The company culture and processes (such as onboarding, performance reviews, and development programs).
The goal of EXD is to create a consistent, valuable, and engaging experience that meets the employee’s fundamental psychological needs (like autonomy, competence, and relatedness) to foster a highly motivated and productive workforce.
Measuring how employee experience design contributes to better employee performance
The success of EXD can be measured by using a dedicated performance management suite to track how the intentionally designed experiences translate into better individual and organizational outcomes and successfully enable higher performance.
Key metrics include:
- Linking positive experience design scores (gathered through specific pulse surveys and employee feedback) directly to concrete performance indicators like higher individual productivity rates;
- Faster time-to-proficiency for new hires (due to optimized onboarding);
- Lower voluntary turnover;
- Reduced absenteeism.
EXD success is also measured by the quality of employee contributions, such as an increase in employee-driven innovation, and higher scores in supervisor evaluations, especially on their ability to coach and develop their teams.
